| PRESS RELEASE 11th September 2009: Old Edwardian Annual & Fundraising Dinner 2009 Saturday, 10th October 2009 |
The Old Edwardian Association of Kuala Lumpur [Ex-students (Tigers) of King Edward VII School, Taiping] will be holding its Edwardian Annual & Fundraising Dinner 2009 on Saturday 10th October, 2009 at 8.00 pm, at the Legend Hotel, 100 Jalan Putra, 50300 Kuala Lumpur.
As the first English school in the Malay States, King Edward VII School, Taiping was started in 1883 as Central School to cater to the needs of the then bustling Taiping town and neighboring districts. In 1905, the school was renamed King Edward VII School (KEVII) in honor of the new King of England.
KEVII has since carved its name in the annals of Malaysian education for academic performance and outstanding achievements in sports especially rugby. The game was introduced into the school way back in 1923 by colonial schoolmasters and the profound impact it has had is evidenced in the fact that Malaysian schools rugby is synonymous with KEVII.
The rich history and traditions of KEVII have created a unique esprit de corps between its alumni that is unrivalled even amongst other premier schools today. The Tigers have excelled and served with distinction in both the private and public sectors and many occupy positions of great responsibility today.
2008 marked the celebration of the school’s 125th year and year-long festivities culminated in the commemoration Gala Dinner on 11th October, 2008 that was graced by HRH Sultan Azlan Shah and other dignitaries. The 125th anniversary celebration was themed to honor past achievements of the alma mater and to lay the foundation for new alumni initiatives that will continue the growth of new Tigers into exemplary citizens.
Continuing from the momentum set last year, the focus of the OEAKL is on three priorities:
a. Formalizing Association plans to make KEVII “Greater Than Before”
b. Fundraising
c. Membership drive for the Association
The Fundraising and Membership drive kick off with this year’s annual dinner on 10th October 2009 at the Legend Hotel, KL and tickets at RM150 per pax are being sold now. For the first time there are also corporate sponsorship tables at RM2,500 each. Monies raised will go towards an interim fund to support selected activities of KEVII students until the KEVII Trust Fund is set up. More fund raising campaigns are planned within the next calendar year.
As part of the membership recruitment drive, ALL members of the Association will receive a FREE multi-purpose membership and discount card and those who sign up at the dinner will receive their cards on the evening itself. The Association thanks Gloria Jean’s Coffees (Malaysia) for being the first participating merchant and offering a 20% discount to members. More merchants are in the pipeline.
