Tiger Traits. Somehow the early administrators of KEVII School had the foresight to use the tiger as the school emblem. The tiger symbolizes masculinity, virility and strength. Obvious traits include courage, enthusiasm, boldness, optimism, fun-loving and energy.
Many a Tiger will also recognize that he can also be volatile, impulsive, impatient, hot-headed, vain and even disobedient!
Henceforth, the distinctive traits and distinctions of The Tiger made it an ideal model for KEVII students through the generations.
Tiger Spirit. However, Tiger Traits was just part of the heartfelt "Tiger Spirit". The spirit is difficult to describe but a true Tiger will tell you the definition is encapsulated in a series of well used phrases. A pertinent phrase is the school motto: "Magni Nominis Umbra" - Under The Shadow Of A Great Name.
Another is, “Greater Than Before”; this phrase from the school song meant that Tigers had to strive to progress, be better and improve. No resting on laurels. It was probably n ingenious teacher who composed the song and the phrase is
"alive" in that it encouraged pro-activity. “Once a Tiger Always a Tiger” has come to mean the sense of belonging and esprit de corp that should exist between Edwardians old and new. Our past colonial masters knew very well how to nurture this kind of camaraderie and the importance of "old boy" networks.
Yet, another phrase is from the school song..."as long as the Taiping Hills stand". This evokes a sense of permanence....that some things just do not change. Also, the reference to the Taiping Hills reminds Tigers of Taiping town; something that we share even with the guys across the drain.
At school, especially in the arena of sports Tigers were always told “never give up" or "never say die" and Tigers lived that phrase on the field. This has guided many a Tiger through much of their adult lives.
